Early Mariners Compass Quilt Circa 1840
with Tulip Border

This exceptional quilt is done in the Mariner's Compass pattern. It is a pattern that only the most accomplished needle woman could undertake. Each compass has 32 points and it was not an easy task to work the pattern out evenly while retaining a circle. Each block is set off with blue and pink sashing and a brown roller printed border with tulips sprouting from each edge. There is some deterioration of fabrics in 6 ~ 8 blocks which has been caused by the acidic elements in the dyes. The sashing also has some popping and a couple of areas of loss. All of these areas appear to be stable but could be further stabilized with crepeline, which is a nearly transparent silk that can be applied over problem areas to give them extra support and keep them from further loss. A muslin sleeve has been added to the back for hanging. This quilt has been exhibited at the Vermont Quilt Festival.

Measures 92" square.

10 ~ 11 stitches per inch .
