19th Century Needlework Tondo Small Child in Orchard

Absolutely Charming! That's the onl way to describe this exquisite needlework picture of a young child sitting in an orchard.  Exhibiting the skill of the maker, it is worked in silk thread on a silk ground with hand painted details.  The face, hair, arms and legs are all hand painted as are the subtle clouds shading the sky in the background.  The tree is in flower (perhaps and apple or cherry tree), made with tiny French knots as is the hedge in the background.  Even the trees surrounding the church steeple in the background are so detailed that individual stitches are used to simulate leaves.  The child's dress makes use of stitches worked in different directions to show folds, creases and depth.  In the foreground are tiny flowers and individual blades of grass adding texture to the field.

The overall condition is excellent with only a couple of tiny pinholes in the silk background.  There is also some crazing of the paint of the face but there is no loss to the detail.

The frame is a lovely simple round wooden one with an inner bead.  Measures 9" in diameter.
