Antique Museum Quality
"Carolina Lily" Quilt Circa 1860s

This New England quilt is an exquisite example of hand piecing, applique and quilting. The person who made this quilt was certainly skilled in the needle arts. In all likelihood, the family of the quiltmaker would have been wealthy as this quilt is not comprised of scraps, but of two turkey red calicos and an over-dyed green that would have been purchased for this quilt. The condition is excellent for the age with very minor age discoloration/staining. I have tried to picture this but it is so faint I'm not sure that you can see it in the photos. The fabrics are all strong and feel as though they have never been washed, and there are a few areas that appear to have faint quilting marks. There is conforming quilting in the lily blocks and around the stars and vine quilting in the muslin sashes and around the applique with 9 - 10 stitches per inch. The edges are turned together and not bound, with the 3/4" green piping having been applied to the top. Measures 82" by 102". There is a cotton sleeve stitched to the back of this quilt for display.
