1840 Wedding Shoes with Family Provenance

The note attached to the sole of one of these slippers reads, "Emily Porter's wedding slippers - married to James H Ferre Nov 27th 1840".  Indeed, according to The Ferre Family Genealogy published in 1978, James and Emily were married in 1840 and had four children born between 1844 and 1849.

The slippers are a lovely example of the period made of tan leather with slightly squared toes and a small decorative silk bow on each.  Flat soled with no indication of right or left foot.  They are lined in utilitarian cotton twill with the foot bed lining being a simpler linen.  The throats are bound with matching silk faille.

Slight wear to the bindings just above the back seams.  The condition of these shoes are excellent for their age.  There is the expected soiling and wear, but as slippers were not meant for extended outdoor wear they are well preserved.

A copy of the Ferry Family Genealogy and the family record from the 1815 family Bible will be included with these shoes.  For other Ferry family items please also see the Ferre family samplers and Bible as well as the 1830s Berlin work presented to Emily Porter.
