Victorian Men's House Shoes
Embroidered Velvet & Leather

Men's shoes and slippers are less commonly found than their counterparts made for women. This pair of men's house shoes or slippers is a wonderful and well worn example common to the Victorian era circa 1870s and 1880s. The heel and quarter are made of black patent leather with a decorative fleur de lis shaped cut out applied at the top of the vamp of black velvet. The vamp is hand embroidered with sprays of colorful flowers. Lined in natural leather and suede with stacked heels.

The overall condition is good with the leather on the heels and quarters having suffered apparently from improper storage. There are areas where the patent leather finish has been pulled away from the shoe and other areas where there appears to be remnants of paper that have stuck to the finish. It would seem that these were either stored wrapped in paper or a box which caused this damage over time. Even so this is a lovely pair of Victorian shoes and a very nice example of the period.
