Colorful Silk Winter Bonnet Circa 1860's

This mid 19th century silk bonnet is one of the prettiest, most colorful that I've seen. It is made from pewter gray silk with pink and copper overtones and stipes in blue purple and light gray. With a 3" neck quilted curtain to keep drafts off the neck. Constructed by drawing the fabric over cords that are stitched between the layers of fabric. Batting was added across the crown for warmth and creating a puffy effect. The back bow and ribbon chin ties are original and in very good condition. The chin ties do have creases from storage but have no splitting or shattering. The lining is also silk in a changeable brown pink stripe. There are several small holes in the silk on the right side, not unusual for the age. No weakness, shattering or dry rot of any of the fabrics.

Measures 24" around the opening and 18" from front edge, around the neck to the opposite front edge.
