Early 19th Century Summer Calash Bonnet

Calash Bonnets were popular from about 1770 through 1830 or so, and were designed to protect the towering hairdos that were popular during that period. This bonnet is made of a fine silk & linen is shirred over canes for support and is meant to be collapsible, folding flat for storage. Decorated with a self bow at the nape of the neck with a 4" neck curtain. The condition is very good. The lavender and white ribbon ties are early replacements, which was not uncommon, with remnants for the original blue ties being visible underneath. Lined in coarse gauze, entirely handstitched. Measures 13" tall not including the neck curtain, 13" from side to side and 12" from front to back when extended.
