Civil War Era Plaid Silk Maternity Wrapper

The back of this wrapper is fitted however there is quite a bit of room in the front around the waistline leading one to the conclusion that this wrapper would have been worn as a maternity garment. In excellent condition, this civil war era wrapper is made of brilliant blue plaid silk combined with brown, black and red. The original matching cord belt/sash is still attached at the waistline, with lush silk and chenille tassels with one area of missing thread though it is not noticeable when displayed.

The silk is strong and pliable, a testament to excellent storage. There is piping at the waistline, armscyes and down the outer seam of the sleeves. Trimmed with bands of ruched silk are the cuffs, shoulders, around the neckline and down either side of the front opening. The bodice is lined in a heavy brown cotton with a corset lacing front and light boning in the front only. The skirt is lined with a light weight tan cotton with one inseam pocket on the right side and solid blue silk facing the skirt opening. Full cartridge pleating is found around the waistline is done by hand as is all the stitching found on this dress. Beautifully made with hook and thread eye closure down the front from neck to hem line. There may be a few pin holes and slight discolorations in the silk due to age however this garment is easily considered in excellent condition with no shattering or other deterioration.
