Made up of five pieces this exquisite wedding outfit dates to circa 1905 and comes from a Westborough, MA family. The detailed outfit is made up of a two piece suit, jacket and skirt of the softest cocoa brown wool, probably cashmere. The jacket is lined in silk satin with double breasted styling. The shoulders are draped with a short double layered cape and bishop sleeves that terminate in turned back cuffs. At the waist is a short peplum and a self belting waist band.
The skirt has deep pleats in the back with hook and eye and snap closures. It is unlined and has decorative stitching detail at the hemline. Appliqued banding extends from just below the knee to the hemline with button detail at the top.
As an alternate to the jacket is a second bodice made of wide wale corduroy that is more casual in style. This was likely meant for wear when traveling on the honeymoon trip. It features hook and eye front closure and is fully lined with brown cotton. The lining has a tear to the right side of the hooks and eyes about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up from the hem, this could easily be repaired. The yoke has vertical pleats and faux epaulets with mother of pearl button accents. The fourth piece of the outfit is a beautiful beaded belt with a long silk tassel that ends just below knee length. The outfit is completed with a matching brown moire cotton ruffled petticoat.
The condition of all pieces is excellent with the exception of the corduroy bodice lining, already mentioned, and minor bead loss on the belt. Otherwise, you'd be hard pressed to find a finer trousseau from any period.
