Early Printed Cotton Infants Dress Circa 1830

Dating to the early 1830s or very late 1820s this infant dress is quite a rarity. Made of cotton in a tiny floral print the dress echoes the styles popular for women of the romantic era with full beret style sleeves capped with pointed epaulets. There is a growth pleat taken in the skirt which has been cut off and turned up at the hemline but is not hemmed. Back closure is with flat brass hooks and eyes at the neckline and waist. The "bow" at the back waistline may have been a belt that was reduced at some point to form the bow. The trim is a flat wool braid that follows the line of the collar and cuffs.

Overall condition is very good. The fabric is strong with no rips or repairs. There are pinholes in the fabric that appears to have been caused by one of the dyes used. This is only noticeable when held to the light and does not detract from the dress. There is also a small area on the waistband where the red dye has bled into the background area, again only noticeable on close inspection.
