The pierrot was a close fitting, low necked jacket with short tails that was popular in the 1780s to 1790s. This piece is made from a striped and floral silk brocade in delicate shades of oyster, green and peach. Entirely hand sewn with front eyelets for lacing. Lined in natural linen. The back features a fan pleated tail. A similarly styled jacket is illustrated on page 121 of Fashion, A History from the 18th to the 20th Century, which features the collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute.
Condition is good however the silk is delicate and there are some splits on the back as shown in the photos as well as the possible replacement of two sections of fabric on the back of the shoulders, also shown. This replacement was made with a similarly colored silk fabric and the areas are the same on each side so do not detract. In addition the bodice appears to have an early alteration where the front side seams may have been taken in for the wearer.
