1924 ID'd Fur Lined Wool Top Coat London Label

Men's clothing from any era is hard to find in any style and this rare fur lined overcoat is no exception. Made in November of 1924 by Callaghan of 10 Maddox Street, London for William C. Bullitt.  Please see the Scott & Co. top hat that we are also offering from the Bullitt estate.

In 1924 Bullitt was newly married to Louise Bryant, who was portrayed by Diane Keaton in the 1981 movie Reds. They were living in Paris where their daughter Anne was born in February of that year. While there he authored a book, It's Not Done (1926) and collaborated with Sigmund Freud on a psychoanalysis of Woodrow Wilson. In 1933 Bullitt would be appointed as US Ambassador to Russia and in 1936 would become the US Ambassador to France. There is much more information on the Bullitt family online. This and the other pieces that I am working on were from the family's summer estate in Ashfield, MA.

This coat is quite heavy being made of a very heavy wool that is fully lined in fur. The lining and collar appear to be muskrat with the collar being sheared and the lining being natural. Double breasted styling with three button closure. The top right button is missing a bit of its rim but otherwise they are all intact. Back vent can be left open or buttoned down with two hidden buttons and loops.

Overall condition is very good to excellent. There is wear along the edges and armscyes of the lining and inner pocket as well as where the fur abraded from sitting and normal use. I do not detect any shedding of the fur. The exterior is in great shape with only slight, nearly unnoticeable, wear on the elbows.
