1920s Orientalist Lamé Tunic Dress

In the first quarter of the 20th century many of the most influential fashion designers were influenced by orientalism, a movement to adapt the exotic flavor of the east to western fashions. Embellishment was at its height and textile arts were heavily influenced as seen in this gold lamé tunic dress dating to the mid 1920's. The fabric features pagodas woven in gold thread over a multi-colored printed pattern featuring women wearing kimonos in an exotic landscape. One of the most beautiful lamé fabrics I've come across.

The collar, front opening, hemline and sleeves are all faced in black silk that is outlined with hand embroidery and closes with a frog closure. The construction of the tunic gives another nod to orientalism; the armscye has been left open purposelyas shown in photos, in a manner similar to a kimono. It would have been worn over an underdress or slip but none was found with the dress.

The overall condition is exceptional and near mint. There are no rips, holes, stains or odors. As perfectly wearable today as in the 1920s!
