1830s Embroidered Muslin Wrapper
Lady's muslin wrapper of tambour embroidered muslin exhibits many features of the Romantic Era circa 1820s - 1830s. Particularly indicative of the popular style of the late 1820s through mid 1830s are the enormous gigot sleeves and wide collar and neckline. The collar falls delicately over a wide tambour embroidered, ruffled yoke with piping providing the transition between the yoke and embroidered ruffle. The width of the shoulders and neckline is emphasized by the collar and ruffle creating the silhouette typical of romantic era clothing. The back has a set in waistband with tight gauging across the top of the skirt. Beautiful embroidered floral sprays ring the hem line, a larger version of those found on the yoke ruffle.
Closure is at the front of the yoke with two brass hooks and thread eyes. The back of the bodice is lined in natural cotton that ties to the front, under the bust line. The gigot sleeves are fitted at the wrist where they are further decorated with scalloped and embroidered edging echoing the edging found on the collar. Piping is found at the yoke, wrist and on the inseam of the sleeves.
Overall, the condition is very good with a few minor age discolorations to be found on the skirt and light soiling around the hemline. There are a couple small breaks in the fabric which do not detract in any way from this beautiful and rare piece. There is light underarm discoloration with no fabric weakness associated. We have not cleaned this item as cleaning could cause irreparable damage to an otherwise presentable piece of early clothing.
